After a number of rumours and plenty of leaks we now have a fresh new one spotted on Weibo that shows the first renders of the much-awaited Mi 5 smartphone. Alongside the images there is another video post on Weibo that shows off the UI of the Mi 5 smartphone placed in a dock.
Clearly, after all those rumours, these indeed look like the first legitimate leaks. The leaked images show off the front and back of the smartphone. The front appears to have a 2.5 D glass while the back is similar to what we have on the Mi Note. There seem to be no capacitive touch keys at the bottom, but just a slim capsule-like, fingerprint reader that also appears to be a home button.
Yes, this is a big smartphone, and has plenty of visual cues that will remind you of Xiaomi’s Mi Note series. Still then, the boldest design change are the rounded corners that make the device stand out from the rest of Xiaomi’s smartphone lineup. On the back we have standard camera set up with a dual LED flash. So far there seems to be no indicators of OIS or a laser-assisted focus system for the camera.
In the video, we simply have demo of the UI on what appears to be the Mi 5 in white, placed on simple dock. While there’s nothing substantial to take away from it, this is indeed the first video appearance of the Mi 5 ever.
According to a previously leaked product listing the Xiaomi Mi 5 will sport a 5.5 Quad HD display (2560 x 1440 pixels) sporting a pixel density of 515 ppi. As expected from the very beginning, the smartphone will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset clocked at 2.5GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM. The smartphone is expected to go on sale in three variants, 16GB, 64GB and 128GB; and none of them sport an SD card slot. You can expect a 20MP camera on the back and an 8MP unit up front for selfies. The device unlike its predecessor will support 4G bands and will be powered by a 3,800 mAh battery. Also set to make an appearance is a USB Type-C port at the bottom.
The pricing of the Mi 5 to expected to be around the Rs 40,000 mark and this may turn out to be the first device to sport to Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset.
