Microsoft’s new tool will guess your emotions based on a single photo

Remember when Microsoft guessed how old you were based on a single photo? The company has released a new AI, known as Project Oxford, that will guess your emotions. And, no, this isn’t some cross-marketing for Disney’s Inside Out.
The point of Microsoft’s technology is ostensibly to allow developers to “build more personalized apps,” according to Microsoft. How developers will actually implement this technology into their apps remains to be seen. Microsoft says its Emotion API will process an image and then return results for each face in a photo, which sounds fun, but how the technology will improve future apps is beyond me.
Emotions that are detected include anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness and surprise.
“These emotions are understood to be cross-culturally and universally communicated with particular facial expressions,” Microsoft said.
